رجوتُI hoped for الصبرَpatience عنكwithout you فراثbut it tarried صبريmy patience
رجوتُ الصبرَ عنك فراث صبري
وقدماًand formerly كانwas صبريmy patience لاnot يريثُtarrying
وقدماً كان صبري لا يريثُ
I hoped for patience without you, but my patience tarried;
I implored patience to forget you, but my patience was running thin
In former times, my patience never tarried.
I had little left within
فقلتُso I said تمثُّلاًquoting a verse لكto you ليتwould that شعريmy knowledge
فقلتُ تمثُّلاً لك ليت شعري
متىwhen يأتيwill reach غياثُكyour aid مَنthe one whom تغيثُyou aid
متى يأتي غياثُك مَن تغيثُ
So I said to you, quoting a verse: 'Would that I knew
So I wondered, if only I knew
when your aid will reach the one you aid!'
When will your aid come to my rescue?
