أكتمُI conceal ماwhat حلَّbefell بيupon me لأنيbecause I
أخافI fear أنthat يشمتgloat الحسودُthe envious one
I conceal what has befallen me, because I
I conceal what has befallen me, for I
fear that the envious one will gloat.
Fear the gloating of envious foes -
إنif قلتُI said أشمَتَّyou caused to gloat بيover me الأعاديthe enemies
قالhe said فهذاthen this الذيwhat أُريدُI want
If I say, “You have made my enemies gloat over me,”
If I say, "My enemies exult over me,"
he says, “That, then, is what I want.”
They will say, "This is what we wanted."
أوor قلتُI said غادرتَنيyou left me قتيلاًslain
قالhe said قتيلone slain الهوىlove شهيدُa martyr
Or if I say, “You have left me slain,”
Or if I say, "You have left me slain,"
he says, “One slain by love is a martyr.”
They will say, "A love-slain man is a martyr."

I complain and weep, yet he does not care,
I complain and weep, but he cares not,
as though his heart were iron.
As if his heart were made of iron.
