I bade him good morning at evening, and he said to me,
In the evening I bid him good morning, so he said to me,
“What is this talk?”—and he thought it a jest.
"What is this talk, do you think this a jest?"
فازددتُso I grew more دهشاًastonishment فوقbeyond دهشastonishment أوَّلٍinitial
وعلمتُand I knew أنيthat I قدindeed أتيتُI had committed جناحاan offense
So my astonishment grew beyond my first astonishment,
So I was more perplexed on top of my first perplexity,
And I knew I had committed an offense.
And I knew that I had come with a mistake.
أحسنbe gracious أباAbu (father of) حسنHasan فحسنُكfor your beauty راعنيastonished me
حتىto the point that توهَّمتُI mistook المساءevening صباحاmorning
Be gracious, Abu Hasan, for your beauty so astonished me
Do well, Abu Hasan, for your goodness distracted me,
That I mistook evening for morning.
Until I imagined the evening as morning.
لاdo not تعجبنَّbe surprised فإنfor indeed وجهكyour face لوif بداappeared
I would surely take it for مصباحاa lamp
Do not be surprised, for if your face appeared
Do not wonder, for if your face appeared
In darkness, I would surely take it for a lamp.
In darkness, I would reckon it a lamp.
أنتyou الذيthe one who حيرتنيyou bewildered me بملاحةٍwith beauty
تركتit left صِباحَthe fair ones العالمينhumankind قِباحاugly
You are the one who bewildered me with beauty
You are the one who confused me with charm
That left the fair among humankind ugly.
That made the morning of the worlds ugly.
كمhow many قدindeed فتنتَyou have bewitched وماand not سعيتَyou strove لفتنةٍfor enchantment
كمhow many قدindeed قتلتَyou have slain وماand not حملتَyou carried سلاحاa weapon
How many you have bewitched without seeking to bewitch!
How much you have tempted without seeking temptation!
How many you have slain without bearing a weapon!
How much you have killed without bearing arms!
