أظهرhe displayed الكبرياءَarrogance منfrom فرطan excess of زهوٍpride
أظهر الكبرياءَ من فرط زهوٍ
فتلقَّيتُهso I received him بذلِّwith the abasement of الخضوعِsubmission
فتلقَّيتُه بذلِّ الخضوعِ
He displayed arrogance from an excess of pride;
He showed great pride from excessive vanity
so I received him with abject submission.
So I met him with complete humility
وحبانيand bestowed upon me ربيعthe spring of خدَّيهhis two cheeks بالورwith roses (continued next line)
وحباني ربيع خدَّيه بالور
دfinal letter of “roses” فأمطرتُهso I rained upon him سحابَclouds of الدموعِtears
د فأمطرتُه سحابَ الدموعِ
And the spring of his cheeks bestowed roses upon me;
And the spring of his cheeks rained roses on me
so I rained clouds of tears upon him.
So I showered him with clouds of tears
