لعشّاقهfor his lovers منهon him لمّاwhen ظلمْhe wronged them
لعشّاقه منه لمّا ظلمْ
Hair appeared upon his face and took revenge
Poetry began to show on his face, so it took revenge
on him for his lovers, when he wronged them.
On his lovers when he was unjust to them

على المُرد إلا زوال النِّعمْ
And God unleashed the growth of beards
And God did not let the beard grow
upon beardless youths only to take their blessings away.
On the impudent one except as bounties decline

توحَّشت العينُ في وجهه

وحقّ لها وحشة في الظُّلمْ
The eye grew uneasy at his face,
The eye has become wild in his face
and rightly feels unease in the darkness.
And it rightly wild in oppression

نِ إلا وأسفلُه كالحممْ
Nor did it rise upon his face like smoke
And nothing showed on his face like soot
unless his lower parts were like charcoal.
Except its lower part like burning embers

If the unused part of his paper has blackened,
When the surplus of his paper turns black
then what must he think of the pen’s paths?
What then is his opinion of the pathways of the pen
