And a garden of yours—the rain kept weaving it,

Until, once it was woven, it began embroidering it.

It weeps over it like a lovesick lover forsaken by

A beloved; then at times it makes the garden laugh and gladdens it.

When its narcissus blossom smiles within it,

Its violets coo to the fresh blooms of its lavender.

There I say to our cupbearer, while in his hand

Is a cup like a flame of fire that he may kindle:

Do not dilute it with anything but your saliva; and if

You are stingy, then my tears will dilute it.

The least of what I suffer from loving you is that my hand,

When it reaches toward my heart, is nearly cooked by it.
