Enough for humankind is what they have learned from the days.

Time’s vicissitudes have brought them to a halt—if only they would stop.

They are devoted to this world and its adornment,

While death abides at the watchpost of lifespans.

They are heedless, but their appointed ends are not heedless,

And they are at ease while souls are snatched away.

Their sipping the water of wishes distracted them, and they forgot

That time sips the water of life.

So whoever dies early is robbed and cut down,

And whoever lives longer faces frailty and senility.

So which of these two is envied and deemed fortunate:

The one whom death hastens to—or who is there who has a replacement?
