جُعِلتُmay I be made فداكyour ransom منfrom بؤسٍmisery وضُرِّand harm
ومنand from مكروهthe evil of حادِثwhat befalls كلِّevery دهرِage
May I be your ransom from misery and harm,
And from the evils that befall in every age.
تعجَّلَcame swiftly منكfrom you إلطافٌkindness وبرٌّand generosity
وأبطأand was slow عنكin reaching you إلطافيmy kindness وبرّيand my generosity
Your kindness and generosity came swiftly,
While my kindness and generosity were slow to reach you.
بغيرwithout تغافلٍneglect منّيon my part ولكنand yet
لقولbecause of the saying of الناسpeople فيin بدوٍthe desert وحَضرِand towns
Not through neglect on my part, but
Because of what people say in desert and town:
إذاwhen أهدىoffers الهديَّةَthe gift مبتديهاthe one who first gives it
فإسراعُthen the haste of المُكافئِthe one reciprocating ضِيقُnarrowness of صَدرِheart
When the first giver offers a gift,
Then haste in reciprocating shows narrowness of heart.
