I had indeed won the one I love, and was cheered
by life's sweetness and living's sweetness, when he felt at ease.
حتّىuntil تعرَّضintruded ليupon me واشٍa slanderer فنغّصنيand spoiled my joy
فصارso became ليfor me مأتماًa funeral ماwhat كانhad been ليfor me عُرُساa wedding
Until a slanderer crossed my path and spoiled my joy,
so what had been a wedding for me became a funeral.

At a gathering that had been delightful, but was soured
by what came from a filthy boor—if only he had never sat down!

In a gathering where noble men planted merriment—
how noble they are, as planters of merriment and as its planting!

If their beauty appeared amid their gathering's beauty,
even one who'd drunk a draught to sleep an age would not doze.

And the cup is like ice, but at its heart is a flame.
Have you ever known ice to befriend a flame?

So the sun flows into this one's mouth, and in that one's hand
it shines: you would think it something to drink and touch.

Until, when ears were stirred by the wit of the
words, whoever dozed was lulled by his own coarse nature.

He had a stomach long left to graze at will;
whenever it camped beside two casks, he quaffed the wine.

And drunkenness is only the steeds of youth running wild;
so how can one whose reason is captive rein in a horse?

Have you not seen the cup bring forth wonders
of joy, yet also bring forth a filthy boor?
