وأحورَand a dark-eyed one صبَّحتُهI wished him good morning فيin المساءِthe evening
وإنيand indeed I لمنsurely from دَهَشٍastonishment مُرعَشُmade to tremble
And I wished a dark-eyed one good morning in the evening,
while I trembled, indeed, with astonishment.
فقالso he said تُهَزِّئُنيyou mock me فيin السَّلامِthe greeting
وكادand he almost لماat what قلتُI said يستوحشُtake offense
He said, “You mock me with your greeting!”
and almost took offense at what I said.
فقلتُso I said دهشتُI was astonished لماat what قدhad رأيتُI seen
ومَنand who ذاis it that يراكsees you ولاand does not يدهشُbecome astonished
So I said, “I was astonished at what I had seen—
and who could see you and not be astonished?”
