Beauty's robes are a delight to the eyes,

And life lies beneath the girdle's knots.

And when my gaze roams through a garden,

The heart yearns for the ripened fruit.

Thus the glance, in love's judgment, became

A witness called to testify about hidden secrets.

What lies within may be inferred from what appears:

Where there is smoke, there is someone kindling a fire.

The company of the wicked ill befits one like you,

As does brotherhood with every man whose veils are torn.

    واختر لنفسك صحبة الأخيارِ

    So shun the wicked, and you will escape their evil;

And choose for yourself the company of the good.

Whoever seeks refuge with evildoers is called an evildoer,

And likewise, whoever seeks refuge with the righteous is called righteous.

And his harm and waywardness mark him out to his kin—

The man whom the ways of rogues delight.

You have debased your body, while suspicions are expert assayers,

Intent upon you, while you are like a dinar.

Why is mention of you unwelcome to the ears

For its ugliness, when your face is a delight to the eyes?

So, by the beauty of your face, safeguard your honor

From anyone who exposes himself to disgrace.

Indeed, a companion is one's counterpart; so if you are

Noble, then keep company with the noble.
