The place I visit is near, yet union is far away.

And my longing wears the heart down anew.

فقلت بذنبي في الهوى وعذابه

فقلت بذنبي في الهوى وعذابه

فيا ربّ خلِّصني فلستُ أعودُ

فيا ربّ خلِّصني فلستُ أعودُ

So I confessed my sin in love and its torment:

So, O Lord, deliver me, for I shall not return.

أتهلكني من غير ذنبٍ وزلَّةٍ

أتهلكني من غير ذنبٍ وزلَّةٍ

فماذا بقتلي يا حبيب تريدُ

فماذا بقتلي يا حبيب تريدُ

Will you destroy me without any sin or fault?

What, then, do you seek by killing me, O beloved?

فو اللَهِ ما بي أن أموت بغصَّتي

فو اللَهِ ما بي أن أموت بغصَّتي

ولكنَّ بي أن يصطفيك حسودُ

ولكنَّ بي أن يصطفيك حسودُ

So, by God, what troubles me is not that I should die of my choking grief,

But that an envious man should choose you for himself.
