Clouds driven on by sorrow—their lightning
Clouds driven by sorrow, its lightnings
Is my heart’s burning thirst, and wailing is their thunder.
Are the anguish of my heart and the thunder my lament
وماand not ذاكthat إلاexcept نارa fire شوقٍlonging توقَّدتflared up
وما ذاك إلا نار شوقٍ توقَّدت

فصعَّد روحي بالدموع وقودُ
And that is nothing but a fire of longing that flared up;
And that is but a fire of yearning kindled
So its fuel sent my soul aloft with tears.
So my spirit ascended in tears its fuel

بلي مبتلاها يستجد جديدُ
Ah, I see nothing like ardent love: whenever
Oh would that I see not the like of youth whenever
Its sufferer wastes away, something new arises.
Its ordeals afflict me, something novel ensues

Nor sick ones like the ailing eyes of wide-eyed beauties:
Nor like the eyes of a sickly invalid
Visited, they pass on their sickness, and the visitor returns.
Repeatedly doctored, its malady returns afresh

Nor anything like the way tender hearts grow hard,
Nor like tender hearts that harden
As though lovers’ hearts were iron.
As though lovers' hearts were iron
