The garden of beauties is a delight to the eyes,

And life's pleasure lies beneath the button fastenings.

And when my gaze roams at leisure through a garden,

The heart longs for the harvest of fruit.

Thus the glance has become, in love's judgment,

A witness called to testify about hidden secrets.

    حيث الدُّخان فثَمَّ موقد نارِ

    What is inward may be inferred from what is outward;

Where there is smoke, there is a hearth alight.

The company of the wicked ill befits one like you,

And brotherhood with anyone whose veils are torn.

So shun the wicked; you will be spared their evil,

And choose for yourself the company of the good.

Whoever shelters with the wicked is called wicked,

And whoever shelters with the righteous is deemed righteous.

Forever reviled are the father and mother

Of one who remains allied with scoundrels.

And harm and disgrace mark the family

Of one who admires the ways of rogues.

You have debased yourself, and the eyes are counterfeit coins,

Fixed upon you, though you are like a dinar.

Why is the mention of you repugnant to the ears

For its ugliness, when your face is a delight to the eyes?

So, by the beauty of your face, guard your honor

From anyone who exposes his honor to disgrace.

One's companion is indeed one's peer; so if you are

Noble, then seek the company of the noble.
