والحاكمُand the judge العدلthe just one الجوادthe generous one المنصفُthe fair one
Between me and you, O cruel one, stands the final reckoning.
Between you and me, O unjust in manner!
And the judge is the Just, the Generous, the Fair.
And the just, generous, fair judge!
فلقدfor indeed خشيتُI feared بأنthat أموتI die بغصَّتيof my choking grief
أسفاًin sorrow عليكover you وأنتwhile you لاnot تتعطَّفُyou show tenderness
For I have feared dying of my choking grief,
I feared I would die choking
in sorrow over you, while you show no tenderness.
With sorrow over you while you show no sympathy!

I have a soul that weeps and an eye that stays awake,
I have an inward part that weeps, a sleepless eye,
limbs wasting away and a heart sick with love.
Limbs that grieve, and an afflicted heart,
أسفٌgrief يدومendures وحسرةand anguish ماnot تنقضيends
وجوىًand love's torment يزيدgrows وكُربةٌand distress ماnot تُكشَفُis relieved
Grief that endures and anguish that never ends,
Lasting sadness, unrelenting regret,
love's torment that grows, and distress never relieved.
Ever-growing passion, unfading distress.
وكأنَّand as though ليI have فيin كلِّevery عضوٍlimb واحدٍsingle
قلباًa heart يحنُّyearns وناظراًand an eye ماnot يطرفُblinks
It is as though in every single limb I have
It's as if each part of me has
a heart that yearns and an eye that never blinks.
A heart that yearns and an eye that cannot blink.
أشكوكَI complain of you أمor أشكوI complain إليكto you فإننيfor I
فيin ذاthis وذاand that متحيِّرٌbewildered متوقِّفُhesitant
Shall I complain of you, or complain to you? For I
Shall I complain of you or complain to you? For I waver, hesitating.
am bewildered and hesitant between the two.
I fear you, nay I fear for you. One moment
أخشاكI fear you بلrather أخشىI fear عليكfor you فتارةًso at times
أرجوI hope for رضاكyour favor وتارةًand at times أتخوَّفُI am afraid
I fear you—rather, I fear for you; at times
I hope for your pleasure, the next I dread it.
I hope for your favor, and at times I am afraid.
I have squandered my soul in love, so for how long
أتلفتُI have ruined روحيmy soul فيin الهوىlove فإلىso until متىwhen
تلهوyou amuse yourself وتتركand you leave مَنthe one who يحبُّكloves you يَتلفُperishes
I have ruined my soul in love; how long will you
Will it wander heedlessly, leaving the one who loves you to perish?
amuse yourself, leaving the one who loves you to perish?
None will wear away like me, so perhaps you will taste
لاmay not متyou die أوuntil تُبلىyou are afflicted بمثلwith the like of بليَّتيmy affliction
فعسىso perhaps تَذوقyou taste كماas تُذِيقyou make others taste فتنصفُand then deal fairly
May you not die until you suffer the like of my affliction,
What you make me taste, and then be fair!
so perhaps you may taste what you make me taste, and deal fairly.
Do not deny my sorrow if the spirit
لاdo not تنكرنَّever reproach تأسفيmy grief إنif فاتنيhas eluded me
روحُthe spirit الحياةof life فكيفso how لاnot أتأسفُI grieve
Do not reproach my grief if I have lost
Of life abandons me—how could I not grieve?
the spirit of life—how could I not grieve?

If Luqman the Wise had seen what
I saw in you, I would see him melt with yearning
I saw in you, you would have seen him sigh with longing,
For one whose face, were it to appear,
شوقاًin longing إلىfor منone who لوif تجلَّىshone forth وجهُهُhis face
للبدرto the full moon كادَwould almost منfrom التحيُّرbewilderment يُكسَفbe eclipsed
yearning for one whose face, if it shone
Would nearly eclipse the dazzled moon.
before the full moon, would leave it almost eclipsed in wonder.
Rather, if Jacob saw Muhammad's beauty
بلrather لوif رأىsaw يعقوبُYa'qub حُسنَthe beauty محمدٍof Muhammad
ماnot كانwas يحزنhe grieves إذwhen تغيَّبdisappeared يوسفُYusuf
Rather, had Ya'qub seen Muhammad's beauty,
He would not grieve when Joseph was absent.
he would not have grieved when Yusuf disappeared.
A peacock of beauty—no, the most perfect graces,

A peacock of beauty—no, more perfect in his charms;
An idol of splendor—no, the greatest, gentlest,
an idol of loveliness—no, more exalted and more delicate,
With tender branches, undulating hips,
بشمائلٍwith graces أغصانُهاtheir branches تتعطَّفُbend gently
وروادفٍand hips أردافُهاtheir buttocks تتردَّفُfollow one behind another
with graces whose branches bend gently,
The ground on which he treads grows prideful,
and hips whose rounded curves follow one upon another.
His face imbued with the water of radiance—

زهواًin pride بهbecause of him وتراهand you see him لاnot يتصلَّفُhe boasts
The earth beneath him grows boastful,
Upon it the basil of hearts flutters softly—
proud of him, yet you see him show no pride.
Unique in his color, as though he were
متشرِّبsaturated with ماءَwater البشاشةِof cheerfulness وجهُهُhis face
فعليهso above it ريحانsweet basil القلوبof hearts يرفرفُflutters
His face is steeped in the water of cheerfulness,
Clear water mingled with sparkling wine.
so above it the sweet basil of hearts flutters.
And as if, strolling, the gleam of his cheek
متفرِّدunique فيin لونهhis complexion فكأنَّهso he seems
ماءٌwater زلالٌclear and pure فيهin it خمرٌwine قَرقَفُshiver-inducing
Unique in his complexion, he seems
Glides smoothly to the core of all creation.
clear, pure water with wine that brings a shiver.
It does no harm that he is unparalleled,
وكأنَّهand he seems فيin سَرحِهِhis pasture ضرغامُهُits lion
صافunclouded الىtoward مُهَجthe hearts الورىof humankind يتصرَّفُhe moves about
And in his pasture he seems its lion,
A sword whose eyes are sharpened blades.
unclouded, ranging toward the hearts of humankind.
His arching eyebrows like a bow drawn back,
ماnot ضرَّهharmed him أنthat لاnot يكونhe should be مقلَّداًgirded with
سيفاًa sword ففيfor in عينيهhis two eyes سيفٌa sword مرهفُkeen-edged
It does him no harm not to be girded
So woe to him who is targeted!
with a sword, for in his eyes is a keen-edged sword.
Poured gracefully in his mold is a pouring
وكأنَّand as though قوسthe bow الحاجبينof the eyebrows مقوّساًcurved
سَهمٌan arrow فويلٌso woe للذيto the one who يستهدفُbecomes a target
And the curved bow of his eyebrows seems
In which there is restraint and lightness.
an arrow—woe to whoever becomes its target!
I envy the tear in his palm—does it know
قدindeed صُبَّhe has been poured فيinto قُرمُوصِهhis hunting blind بلياقةٍwith fitting grace
صَبّاًa pouring ففيهso in him تمكُّنٌfirm poise وتخفُّفُand lightness
He has been poured into his hunting blind with fitting grace,
In which palm it dwells?
poured so that he is firmly poised, yet unencumbered.
If his teardrop takes wing and flies,
إنّيindeed I لأحسدُsurely envy باشِقاًa sparrowhawk فيin كفِّهhis palm
أتراهdo you think it يدريknows أيّwhich كفٍّhand يألفُit is accustomed to
Indeed, I envy a sparrowhawk in his hand;
Muhammad captivates our hearts.
do you think it knows what hand it has grown used to?
My Master, if all the world's mouths described you,
إنif كانis باشقُهُhis sparrowhawk يحلِّقsoars طائراًin flight
فمحمدٌthen Muhammad لقلوبناat our hearts يتخطَّفُhe snatches away
If his sparrowhawk soars in flight,
You would transcend any description.
then Muhammad snatches away our hearts.
Graces have multiplied in you, confusing minds,
مولايmy lord لوif وصفَتكَdescribed you أفواهُthe mouths الورىof humankind
طُرّاًall together لكنتَyou would be تجلُّrise above عَمّاbeyond what تُوصَفُyou are described as
My lord, if the mouths of humankind described you,
While you are above all artifice.
all together, you would still rise above their descriptions.
Ask the rose of his cheek, which beauty planted it?
قدindeed ساعَفَتكhave favored you محاسنٌcharms قدindeed حيَّرتhave bewildered
فيكabout you العقولَthe minds وأنتyet you لاnot تتسعفyou show favor
Charms have favored you and bewildered
We see it bloom only to swiftly wither.
minds contemplating you, yet you show no favor.
Had you not redoubled my torment in love
سلask وردthe rose خدِّكof your cheek أيwhat حُسنٍbeauty غرسُهُits planting
إنّاindeed we نراهsee it يعودit returns ساعةَthe moment يُقطَفit is picked
Ask the rose of your cheek how beautiful its planting is:
The narcissus of your eyes would not weaken me so.
indeed, we see it return the moment it is picked.
Your glances know my weakness yet your forbearance
لوif لمnot تضاعفyou doubled ليfor me عذابيmy torment فيin الهوىlove
ماnot راحwent on نرجُسthe narcissus ناظريكof your two eyes يضعِّفُweakens
Had you not doubled my torment in love,
Is wondrous—the mighty overcome the frail.
the narcissus of your eyes would not go on weakening me.
Had you no malice, you would not deny
علمتhave known لواحظُكyour glances الضِّعافthe languid ones تجلُّديmy fortitude
ومنand among العجائبwonders غالبٌa conqueror مستضعَفُdeemed weak
Your languid glances have come to know my fortitude;
What you recognize in love.
and among wonders is a conqueror deemed weak.
So you saw in a dream what you denied awake,
لوif لمnot تُرِدyou sought قلبيmy heart بغيرwithout جنايةٍany wrongdoing
ماnot كنتyou were تنكرyou deny فيin الهوىlove ماwhat تعرفُyou know
Had you not sought my heart, though it had done no wrong,
As a voice called out to you insistently.
you would not deny in love what you know.
Thus our spirits mingled in oblivion
فرأيتَthen you saw فيin النَّومsleep الذيwhat أنكرتَهyou denied it
فيin يقظةٍwakefulness منfrom هاتفٍan unseen caller بكto you يهتفُcalls out
Then in sleep you saw what you had denied
While our bodies did not.
while awake, from an unseen voice calling out to you.
So my spirit came to you then, saying:
فتألَّفَتso came together أرواحُناour spirits عندduring الكرىsleep
إذsince كانتwere الأجسامُthe bodies لاnot تتألَّفُcome together
So our spirits came together in sleep,
Between you and me, O unjust in manner!
since our bodies would not come together.
فأتَتكthen came to you روحيmy spirit حينat ذاكthat time بقولهاwith its words
بينيbetween me وبينكand between you ياO ظلومُcruel one الموقفُthe place of judgment
Then my spirit came to you with these words:
Between me and you, O cruel one, stands the final reckoning.
