فياso, O منيتيmy heart's desire لاmay … not كانbe عندكwith you ماwhat عنديwith me
You were alone with the one you love, and left me all alone.
You spent time with your beloved and left me alone
So, O my heart's desire, may you never suffer what I suffer.
So my wish, if only you had what I have
تجرعتُI swallowed منكمfrom you (plural) غصةًchoking grief بعدafter غصةٍchoking grief
فمنand so from قبحthe ugliness of هجرانٍabandonment إلىto وحشةthe desolation of الصدِّrejection
From you I have swallowed choking grief upon choking grief,
I have sipped sorrow after sorrow because of you
from the ugliness of abandonment to the desolation of rejection.
How ugly is abandonment leading to the misery of disregard
وعدتَyou promised مواعيداًpromises فكانتand they were نسيئةًon credit
فعاجلنيyet it reached me at once منكfrom you التبغُّضshowing hatred بالنقدِin ready cash
You made promises, and they were on credit;
You made vain promises that came to nothing
yet your hostility reached me at once, in ready cash.
So quick you were to spurn me with criticism

تعطُّفthe compassion of مولىًa master بالجميلwith kindness علىtoward العبدِthe slave
For if I were a slave, it would not be unseemly
If I were your slave it wouldn’t be odd
for a master to show kindness to a slave.
For a master to show kindness to his servant

فكيفso how أُرجّيI hope for الوصلunion منكfrom you علىamid البعدِdistance
Yet you did your utmost to shun me even when we were near;
And though you’ve been cold despite our closeness
how, then, can I hope for union with you when we are far apart?
How could I hope for intimacy when you’re so remote
