Can your stature, O Abu al-Abbas, be compared

to a myrtle branch? This is no comparison.

A body whose graces rival pearls,

fresh and moist—can it be compared to a myrtle branch?

A full moon, almost melting from his softness,

but for his firmness and a hard heart.

Remembering you has given me over to obsession,

O my master, and love of you has turned my hair gray.

And your lovely, halting speech—indeed, it

has given me the gift of broken breaths.

What harm would it do you to take pity on a lover

    bewildered between hope and despair?

My lord, since you left him, your servant has become,

because of what ails him, a tale for people to tell.

Were he to die, death would be easier for him

than what he endures and suffers in love.

He spends his night and his day

only in remembrance of you, O Abu al-Abbas.
