أمّاas for السَّماءthe sky فماso not فيهاin it سوىexcept قمرٍa moon
أمّا السَّماء فما فيها سوى قمرٍ
فياso, O مُهيمنGuardian كمhow many فيin الأرضthe earth منof قَمَرِa moon
فيا مُهيمن كم في الأرض من قَمَرِ
As for the sky, there is but one moon in it.
The sky holds nothing but a moon,
So, O Guardian, how many moons there are on earth!
My restless one, how many moons are on earth!
قدindeed كنتُI used to أسمعhear عنهabout him قبلbefore رؤيتهِseeing him
قد كنتُ أسمع عنه قبل رؤيتهِ
ببعضabout some of ذاthis ليسis not رأيُsight العَينthe eye كالخَبَرِlike hearsay
ببعض ذا ليس رأيُ العَين كالخَبَرِ
Before seeing him, I had heard about him
I had heard of him before seeing him,
Something of this; what the eye sees is not like hearsay.
For the eye's view is not like hearing of him.
