قدindeed مرَّpassed بيby me أحمدٌAhmad فماbut did not وَقَفاstop
فليتهso, if only he فيon رجوعهhis return عطفاturned toward me
Ahmad passed me by, but did not stop.
Ahmad passed by me but did not stop,
If only he would turn toward me on his return!
Would that on his return he had paid me some heed.
فقلتُso I said سُؤليmy heart’s desire أماwill you not ترقُّfeel pity لمنfor one who
أمسىhas become منfrom الحبِّlove هائماًdistraught with love دَنِفاwasting away
So I said, “My heart’s desire, will you not pity one
So I said, “Will you not have pity on one
Who has become, through love, distraught and wasting away?”
Who pines all night, crazed with love?”
فاحمرَّthen reddened خدّاهhis two cheeks منfrom معاتبتيmy reproach
كأنماas though الوردthe roses منهماfrom them both قُطِفاhad been plucked
Then his cheeks reddened at my reproach,
At my reproach his cheeks turned red
As though roses had been plucked from them.
As though roses had just been plucked from them.
فقالso he said ليto me لاdo not تلمblame علىfor صلفيmy conceit
كلُّevery مليحٍfair one ترىyou see لهhe has صَلَفاconceit
He said to me, “Do not blame me for my conceit;
Then he said, “Do not blame my indifference -
Every fair one, you will find, has some conceit.”
You will always find the handsome ones disdainful.”
