وتمثال نور في أديم هواءِ
A breeze of fragrance in a sheer robe of water,
A breeze's fragrance amid the shade of water
And a figure of light in a skin of air.
And a statue of light against the expanse of air

مصفّىً بفرطَي رقةٍ وصفاءِ
He resembled a moist pearl, overlaid with a gem,
It told of a moist pearl veiled in essence
Refined by utmost delicacy and clarity.
Purified by the utmost gentleness and clarity

The All-Merciful indeed took pity on his body's delicacy,
Indeed the Merciful had mercy on the delicacy of his body
So He cloaked him in a robe of His light.
So He clothed him in a cloak of His light

He appears an angel in beauty, in his supremacy
Thus he is of light's light, within radiance's radiance.
For from light comes light, in brilliance upon brilliance

على أنني من أوصف الشعراءِ
I was bewildered by him; I cannot describe him well,
I was bewildered by him, I cannot aptly describe him
Though I am among the poets most skilled at description.
Though I am among the most eloquent poets

قلوبُ رجالٍ لا أكُفُّ نساءِ
Had he been in Joseph's time, what would have been cut
If he were in Joseph's time, the hearts
Was men's hearts, not women's palms.
Of men would be torn, not just women

He whirls the twin swords of his glances round and round,
With the glances of his eyes he directs affairs
And so kills us without shedding blood.
Killing us without shedding blood
