    O you who rise above all measure and rank,

    and you who are too subtle for imaginings and thoughts,

    and you whose form, in the beauty of its making,

    holds subtleties finer than those of all other forms:

    بحسنها بانَ عن كيفيّة البَشَرِ

    within it are charms of diverse kinds, combined;

    its beauty sets you apart from human nature.

    With traits whose composition holds marvels,

    fashioned from light and signs for reflection.

    If I say, “A bough with a moon at its summit,”

    then I have only sought to praise the bough and the moon.

    والمرء يُؤتى إذا يُؤتى من الحَذَرِ

    He gave me love to drink—a cup I used to fear;

    and a man, when undone, is undone through caution.
