O you who your brothers sold
and O namesake of the one they cast into the fire!

Were it not for the beauty of your figure that delights me,
If not for the saltiness of your wit that delights me

ما كنتُ أرعى نجوم الليل مُكتئباً
ولاand not بكيتُI wept بدمعٍwith tears واكفٍfalling جاريflowing
ولا بكيتُ بدمعٍ واكفٍ جاري
I would not watch the stars of night in sorrow,
I would not tend the stars of night in melancholy
nor would I weep with falling, flowing tears.
Nor weep with copious, flowing tears
إنif كنتَyou were قدindeed حُلتَyou turned away عنfrom وَصليunion with me بلاwithout جُرُمٍwrongdoing

If you have indeed turned away from union with me, through no fault of mine,
If you have left my company without fault
then God will grant me justice against every betrayer.
Then God will do me justice against every traitor
