إذا ما استبدل الوام
قُcompletion of 'lover' بُعدَdistance الدارof the dwelling بالقربِin place of nearness
قُ بُعدَ الدار بالقربِ
When the lover exchanges
If the beauty of youth fades away,
nearness for a distant dwelling,
And distance replaces nearness,
ولمand not يبقremain سوىexcept الأخباthe news (word continues)
ولم يبق سوى الأخبا
رcompletion of 'news' والرُّسلand the messengers معwith الكُتبِthe letters
ر والرُّسل مع الكُتبِ
and nothing remains but news
If there remains only news
and messengers with letters,
And messages along with books,
فقدthen indeed رَثَّتhave frayed قُوىthe bonds العهدِof the pledge
فقد رَثَّت قُوى العهدِ
كماjust as رثَّتhave frayed قوىthe bonds الحُبِّof love
كما رثَّت قوى الحُبِّ
then the bonds of the pledge have indeed frayed,
Then the strength of covenants has perished
just as the bonds of love have frayed.
Just as the strength of love perished,
ومَنand whoever غابis absent عنfrom العَينِthe eye
ومَن غاب عن العَينِ
فقدthen indeed غابis absent عنfrom القلبِthe heart
فقد غاب عن القلبِ
And whoever is absent from sight
And he who is absent from the eye
is indeed absent from the heart.
Is also absent from the heart.
