    And you rejoice,

and leave one who loves you to waste away and perish.

He has an eye that, since you departed, has tasted no sleep,

and a heart that tosses upon embers of ghada wood.

Love made me drink the poison of separation—so heal me,

for you possess the proven antidote of reunion.

You scattered for my heart the safflower seeds of companionship and hope,

so it came to thrash in the snare of love.

    All avenues have been cut off for me in my love for you;

so, by God, I know not what means to seek.

So do not ask me how I fare after your departure:

for how fares a body whose soul is kept from it?

For one whose beloved's face has vanished from his sight,

the spirit of life is then banished from his soul.

And how fares one who has tasted bliss and its sweetness,

and now, after bliss, suffers torment?

The joy of love is sweeter than all of life,

and separation's anguish is more grievous than death's choking pang.

I was thrust into bitterness after pleasure,

and kept far from what I was once brought close to.

Indeed, I once enjoyed bliss in the comfort of paradise,

but now I am in a fire that blazes upon me.

    أجَل والقلى بعد التلطف أصعبُ

    And the hardest thing is misery after good fortune;

yes, and hatred after tenderness is harder.

    فشوقي مكينٌ واصطباري مذبذب

    Whenever I call upon patience, love answers me;

for my longing is firmly rooted, while my endurance wavers.

When two contend within the heart—agonizing longing

and patience—then longing is without doubt the stronger.

May God send rain upon a night when I used to visit you,

and depart from you in fear, keeping watch.

There is joy, with you appointed its commander,

and around you a procession from the army of delight.

For if you have cast me away and forgotten me,

you are yet nearer to my heart than nearness itself.

Then let the world be no more, if its life

and its pleasure are like a garment that wears out and is stripped away.
