As though in every organ and limb of mine
It seems as if in every limb I have there lies
there were a yearning heart and an eye craving to gaze,
A heart that yearns, an eye that longing spies

longing for a tender source of delight—were they to touch
For soft delights - if but his hands would touch
a boulder of rock, his two hands would make the rock sprout.
Cold barren rock, that rock would blossom wise

A bough that has drunk deep of the water of bliss—so if
A branch that drank of heavenly bliss, that if
his garments were stripped from his body, he would flow.
His raiment from his form were torn aside

His Creator has fashioned him from a breeze of perfume,
Would flow in streams. His Maker formed of balm
and guarded him in a veil of light, so he was hidden.
And light's pure veil his modest limbs did hide

His contours grew so delicate that, were there to pass over him
So gentle are the borders of his form
a fancy of the mind, he would be wrung out through sheer softness.
Imagination, melting, would but glide

If the shadow of a fly that flew from afar
O'er their soft sweetness. If a gnat's wing-breath
passed beside his lovely features, it would leave a trace upon them.
Should brush those beauties, trace of it would 'bide

O bough of the bān tree! If the bough could see him
O bending branch, as if a branch could see,
when he swayed, the bough would be bewildered and dazzled.
At thy soft bending it would glow with pride

He sways softly, so hearts sway for him,
He sways so gently that men's hearts are swayed,
and longing strides through the entrails whenever he strides.
And longing in their breasts leaps forth beside

My heart says to my eye when it sees him:
My heart says to mine eyes whene'er they spy him:
Look—is this person you see an angel or a human being?
"See there an angel or a mortal glide?"

If wine were pressed from his cheeks, it would be pressed out,
Wine from his cheeks if pressed would flow, or light
or if coquetry were spread from his eyelids, it would spread.
Dispersed, if o'er them dawn its gates were wide.

Two cheeks that, if blown upon in thought, would catch
Cheeks at a breath enkindled into flame,
fire; and if distilled, their delicacy would make them drip.
Or, from their softness dropping gentle, glide.

If there were no moon by which the darkness is dispelled,
Were there no moon to light the dark, God would
God would make Abd al-Wahid the moon.
Make that lone servant moon for all beside.
