Is it time for you to be kind,
Or has your heart still not found satisfaction?
Or is your heart still unappeased?
أنتyou الطبيبthe physician فماso what يضرwould harm (continued)
أنت الطبيب فما يضر
رُكَyou (completes يضرّك) لوif شَفيتَyou healed المدنَفاthe gravely ill one
رُكَ لو شَفيتَ المدنَفا
You are the physician; what harm would it
You are the doctor, so no harm in
do you if you healed the gravely ill?
Healing one who is diseased.
مَنone whose فيin يديكyour hands تلافُهhis rescue
مَن في يديك تلافُه
لاdo not تَلهُbe heedless عنهof him فيتلفاlest he perish
لا تَلهُ عنه فيتلفا
One whose rescue lies in your hands—
The one in your hands, be gentle,
do not neglect him, lest he perish.
Don't neglect him to his grief.
ماwhat ضرَّwould harm مَنone who هوhe فيin القلوthe hearts (continued)
ما ضرَّ مَن هو في القلو
بcompletes القلوب: the hearts مُحكَّمٌvested with authority لوif أنصفاhe acted justly
ب مُحكَّمٌ لو أنصفا
What harm would it do one who, in hearts,
No harm comes to one whose heart
holds sway, if he acted justly?
Is ruled justly, though aloof.
ليتwould that الحبيبthe beloved بُلِيwere afflicted بمنwith someone who
ليت الحبيب بُلِي بمن
يجفوspurns الحبيبthe beloved إذاwhenever جفاhe spurns
يجفو الحبيب إذا جفا
Would that the beloved were afflicted with someone
If only the beloved suffered
who spurns the beloved whenever he spurns them.
When the lover's affection ceased!
