ماذاwhat يضرُّharms الحبيبَthe beloved لوif عطفاhe showed tenderness
ماذا يضرُّ الحبيبَ لو عطفا
فأنصفand then treated fairly المستهامَthe lovesick one وانتصفاand took his due
فأنصف المستهامَ وانتصفا
What harm would it do the beloved to show tenderness,
What would hurt the beloved if he showed kindness,
to grant the lovesick one justice and take his own due?
So be just to the passionate one and stand up for yourself.
لاdo not تخلفbreak الوعدَthe promise ليto me أياO سَكَنيmy solace
لا تخلف الوعدَ لي أيا سَكَني
فإنfor indeed فيin خلفهits breaking ليَfor me التلفاruin
فإن في خلفه ليَ التلفا
Do not break your promise to me, O my solace,
Do not break your promise to me, O my tranquility,
for in its breaking lies my ruin.
For breaking it would ruin me.
هجركyour desertion إنif دامَit continued ليfor me بغيرwithout وفاًfidelity
هجرك إن دامَ لي بغير وفاً
قضيتُI perished وجداًfrom longing بغصَّتيwith my choking grief أسفاin sorrow
قضيتُ وجداً بغصَّتي أسفا
If your desertion of me endures without fidelity,
If your estrangement from me persists without loyalty,
I would die of longing, choking on my sorrow.
I will perish from my sorrow and grief.
لاno خيرgood فيin الوعدthe promise لاno تمامfulfillment لهfor it
لا خير في الوعد لا تمام له
كأنَّهas though it were البرقlightning لاحit flashed واختطفاand vanished
كأنَّه البرق لاح واختطفا
There is no good in a promise left unfulfilled;
A promise not kept has no good in it,
it is like lightning that flashes and vanishes.
As if it were lightning that flashed and was gone.
سهامarrows عينthe eye الحبيبof the beloved تقتلنيkill me
سهام عين الحبيب تقتلني
كأنas though فيin مهجتيmy heart لهاfor them هدفاa target
كأن في مهجتي لها هدفا
The arrows of the beloved's eye kill me,
The glances of the eyes of the beloved kill me,
as though within my heart there were a target for them.
As if my heart were their target.
ماnot حلَّwas permissible هذاthis وليسand is not ذاthis حسناًgood
ما حلَّ هذا وليس ذا حسناً
أنthat تتركنّيyou leave me متيَّماًenslaved by love دنفاwasting with sickness
أن تتركنّي متيَّماً دنفا
This is not permissible, nor is it good:
This situation is not good nor beautiful,
to leave me enslaved by love and wasting away.
That you leave me disconsolate and dejected.
ياoh ليتif only شعريmy knowing متىwhen يكونthere will be لناfor us
يا ليت شعري متى يكون لنا
وقتٌa time نرىwe see الشملthe company فيهin it مؤتلفاunited
وقتٌ نرى الشمل فيه مؤتلفا
Oh, if only I knew when we would have
Oh, if only I knew when we will have
a time when we see ourselves reunited.
A time when we see each other reconciled.
ماhow أقبحugly التيهarrogance بالمِلاحin the beautiful ومَنand whoever
ما أقبح التيه بالمِلاح ومَن
كانis مليحاًbeautiful فلاthen not يكنlet him be صلفاhaughty
كان مليحاً فلا يكن صلفا
How ugly is arrogance in the beautiful! And whoever
How ugly is wandering lost and unaware,
is beautiful, let him not be haughty.
And he who was beautiful should not become rude.
