I have tired of union because of ugly conduct.
I have wearied of love and its ugly deeds,
Yet I had never known my heart to tire easily.
Though my heart was not wont to feel bored.
فلوfor if كانwere يُنصفنيtreating me fairly مَنthe one whom أُحِبُّI love
لكانthen he would be العزيزَthe exalted one وكنتُand I would be الذليلاthe humbled one
For if the one I love treated me fairly,
If she whom I love would do me justice,
He would be exalted, and I would be humbled.
The mighty one would be brought low and I exalted.
إذاif لمnot تكنthere is فيin الهوىlove رغبةٌdesire
فإنthen indeed الهوىlove لاnot يساويis worth الفتيلاthe thread of a date stone
If there is no desire in love,
If there is no passion in love,
Then love is not worth a date-stone thread.
Then love is not worth a blade of straw.
