    By the languor of your gaze and its black-and-white beauty,

    And by the light of your cheek and its redness,

    فيه ظلامٌ من عِذارِهْ

    And by the radiance of your cheek, which

    Holds a darkness from its beard-line;

    And by the wine of your mouth—indeed, I have

    A long-enduring longing for its wine—

    And by the beauty of a figure that awed me,

    Surpassing the bough when it was green:

    Do not wear out my heart with separa-

    tion, nor torment it with its fire.
