ولمّاand when رأيتُI saw الحُبَّlove قدalready مدَّextended جسرهits bridge
ولمّا رأيتُ الحُبَّ قد مدَّ جسره
ونوديَand a cry was raised فيamong العُشاقthe lovers ويحَكُمُwoe to you all فرُّواflee!
ونوديَ في العُشاق ويحَكُمُ فرُّوا
And when I saw that love had extended its bridge,
When I saw that love had built its bridge,
and a cry rang out among the lovers, "Woe to you! Flee!"
And lovers were called to cross while cowards fled,
تبادرتُI hastened نحوtoward الجسرthe bridge كيماso that أجوزهI might cross it
تبادرتُ نحو الجسر كيما أجوزه
فأدرَكَنيthen overtook me الحرمانُdeprivation وانقطعand broke الجِسرُthe bridge
فأدرَكَني الحرمانُ وانقطع الجِسرُ
I hastened toward the bridge so that I might cross it,
I hurried towards the bridge to cross it,
then deprivation overtook me, and the bridge broke.
But deprivation overtook me and the bridge collapsed.
