قالواthey said تحبُّyou love فلاyet not تغارyou feel jealous فقلso say لهمto them
قالوا تحبُّ فلا تغار فقل لهم
لاnot يمنعwithholds الماعونَthe vessel عنديin my view مَنwhoever عَقَلْhas sense
لا يمنع الماعونَ عندي مَن عَقَلْ
They said, “You love, yet you are not jealous”; say to them:
They say, "Love, but do not be jealous." I say to them,
In my view, no one with sense withholds a vessel.
"Affection does not stop me from using my reason.
إنif مَسَّهhas touched it دَنَسُthe taint الإجارةof hire مرَّةًonce
إن مَسَّه دَنَسُ الإجارة مرَّةً
فالماءthen water يغسلwashes away عذرَthe excuse for ذاكthat اذاwhen اغتسلْhe bathes
فالماء يغسل عذرَ ذاك اذا اغتسلْ
If the taint of hire has touched it once,
If the filth of greed touches him once,
then water washes away the excuse for that when he bathes.
Water washes away the excuse of one who bathes."
