بحقِّBy the sanctity of الإشاراتthe signs التيthat كُنَّwere بينناbetween us
بحقِّ الإشارات التي كُنَّ بيننا
أتذكرهاDo you remember them? أمor أنتَyou غيرnot ذَكُورone who remembers
أتذكرها أم أنتَ غير ذَكُور
By the sanctity of the signs that were between us,
By the signs that were between us
Do you remember them, or are you forgetful?
Do you remember or are you unmindful?
فمنFor from عينكyour eye الكحلاءkohl-dark كانتwas بليَّتيmy affliction
فمن عينك الكحلاء كانت بليَّتي
فويلاهSo, alas! منbecause of غنجٍcoquetry بهاin it وفتورِand languor
فويلاه من غنجٍ بها وفتورِ
For from your kohl-dark eye came my affliction.
For from your kohl-darkened eye was my affliction
So alas for the coquetry and languor in it!
Woe to the languor and ennui in it!
تفرَّقتِscattered اللذّاتthe pleasures عنّيaway from me لفقدكمbecause of losing you
تفرَّقتِ اللذّات عنّي لفقدكم
تفرُّقَthe scattering of أجنادٍtroops لفقدat the loss of أميرa commander
تفرُّقَ أجنادٍ لفقد أمير
Pleasures scattered away from me when I lost you,
Pleasures have dispersed from me, for your loss
As troops scatter at the loss of a commander.
As troops disperse, for loss of their emir
