أهابُكَ أم أُبدي إليك الذي أُخفي

أهابُكَ أم أُبدي إليك الذي أُخفي

وطرفك يدري ما يقول له طرفي

وطرفك يدري ما يقول له طرفي

Should I stand in awe of you, or reveal to you what I conceal?

Should I confess my love or keep it hidden?

And your gaze knows what my gaze says to it.

Your eyes know what mine are saying.

نهاني حيائي منك أن أكشف الهوى

نهاني حيائي منك أن أكشف الهوى

وأغنيتَني بالفهم منك عن الكشفِ

وأغنيتَني بالفهم منك عن الكشفِ

My shyness before you forbade me to disclose my love,

My shyness stops me from revealing my passion,

and your understanding spared me the need for disclosure.

Yet your understanding spares me from confessing.

تلطفتَ في أمري فإن أك ساعياً

تلطفتَ في أمري فإن أك ساعياً

إلى غايةٍ فاللطف يُدرَك باللطفِ

إلى غايةٍ فاللطف يُدرَك باللطفِ

You have dealt gently with me; for if I am striving

You've been gentle about my situation. If you're

toward a goal, gentleness is attained through gentleness.

Seeking the goal, gentleness meets gentleness.

تلقَّيتني بالبشر حتى كأنَّما

تلقَّيتني بالبشر حتى كأنَّما

تبشِّرني بالعَبث أنَّك في كفّي

تبشِّرني بالعَبث أنَّك في كفّي

You welcomed me with such cheer, it was as though

You greeted me with smiles as if to say:

you were playfully giving me glad tidings that you were in the palm of my hand.

"Don't worry, you're in good hands with me."

وتُدركني من هيبتي لك وحشةٌ

وتُدركني من هيبتي لك وحشةٌ

فتؤنسني بالعطف منك وباللطفِ

فتؤنسني بالعطف منك وباللطفِ

And loneliness overtakes me because of my awe of you,

And when awe of you made me shy,

so you comfort me with your affection and gentleness.

You put me at ease with kindness and tact.

تكاملتَ إحساناً وحسناً وفطنةً

تكاملتَ إحساناً وحسناً وفطنةً

وزدتَ كمالاً بالتصنُّع والظَّرفِ

وزدتَ كمالاً بالتصنُّع والظَّرفِ

You have attained perfection in kindness, beauty, and discernment,

You've perfected kindness, beauty and wisdom,

and added to your perfection through artifice and elegance.

And added perfection with pretense and grace.

فحبُّك فيه عِصمَةٌ وهو فتنة

فحبُّك فيه عِصمَةٌ وهو فتنة

فيشفي بما يُضني ويضني بما يشفي

فيشفي بما يُضني ويضني بما يشفي

For in love of you lies protection, yet it is temptation;

So loving you brings salvation yet temptation -

so it heals with what exhausts, and exhausts with what heals.

It heals what hurts me and hurts what heals me.

وتُحيي محبّاً أنت في الحبّ حتفُه

وتُحيي محبّاً أنت في الحبّ حتفُه

وذا عجبٌ كون الحياة من الحتف

وذا عجبٌ كون الحياة من الحتف

And you revive a lover—you are his death in love;

Loving you, one finds in love his end.

and this is a wonder: life coming from death.

Strange that death should come from life!

لك الخير قد عجَّلتَ لي صَفوةَ الهوى

لك الخير قد عجَّلتَ لي صَفوةَ الهوى

ومثلك عندي لا يُكدِّر ما يصفي

ومثلك عندي لا يُكدِّر ما يصفي

May good be yours! You have swiftly brought me love's pure essence,

Good sir, you've given me the prime of love.

and one like you, in my view, does not cloud what he makes clear.

One like you doesn't trouble what is clear.

فجُد لي بوعدٍ منك أحيا بروحه

فجُد لي بوعدٍ منك أحيا بروحه

وجُد لي مع الوعد الأمانَ من الخُلفِ

وجُد لي مع الوعد الأمانَ من الخُلفِ

So grant me a promise from you, by whose spirit I may live,

Please promise me - your word will revive my soul.

and with the promise, grant me assurance that it will not be broken.

Please, with your promise, assure me of your faith.
