The memory of departing caravans stirred me,
The recollection of companionship agitated me,
And of lovely maidens, bashful and fair.
And the melodious singers with charming voices,
ياO صاحبيَّmy two companions الآنnow فاسقيانيso give me a drink, you two
لعلَّperhaps يُشفىis healed ألمُthe pain الهجرانِof separation
O my two companions, now give me a drink,
My friend, serve me a drink now,
Perhaps the pain of separation will be healed.
Perhaps it may cure the pain of separation.

This is the time for drinking and singing girls,
This is the time for drinking and companionship,
And a gathering-place lush with basil.
And a tender gathering of basil plants.

Do you not see the anemones
Do you not see the anemones laughing,
Laughing in the spacious heart of the garden?
In the prime of the garden?

Our time is among the sweetest of times,
Our time is the finest of times,
Were it not for the searing heartache and sorrows
If not for the burning agony and sorrows,

For love of one who holds my reins in his hand—
For the love of one who holds my reins,
One whom I do not see, and who does not see me.
Whom I do not see and who does not see me.

I lament my plight to one possessed of power—
I complain to the One of great power over my plight,
My anguish, and, for me, the burning pain of the singing girls.
Relieve me and quench the pain of companionship.
لمdid not يدرِknow إسراريwhat I concealed ولاnor إعلانيwhat I made known

No one knew what I concealed or what I made known,
None but He who has afflicted me with His love,
Except the one who afflicted me with love for him.
Knows my secrets or my proclamations.
