They departed; our livers are wounded, and our eyes
They marched on while our livers were wounded, and our eyes
are sore, and our souls are drunk with anxiety.
Were hurt, and our souls drunk with anxiety,

Our inner selves lament the burning anguish of their distance,
Our insides complain of burning in their absence,
but our outward selves complain of fear.
Yet our outsides complain of separation.

They seemed, atop the riding-camels' saddles, while
As if they were above the humps of the camel, and it walked
the camels traveled in a linked train through pitch-dark dusk,
Dripping in your dark night,

brilliant stars, shining in the constellations,
The meteors in the constellations bloom
moving in the coursing heavens in orderly succession.
Moving in the orbit flowing methodically.
ياO مُوحِشيyou who make desolate الدارِthe dwelling مذsince بانواthey departed كماjust as أَنِسَتْit felt at ease
يا مُوحِشي الدارِ مذ بانوا كما أَنِسَتْ
بقُرْبهمْthrough their nearness لاmay it not خَلَتْbe devoid منof صَيِّبٍa downpour غَدَقabundant
بقُرْبهمْ لا خَلَتْ من صَيِّبٍ غَدَق
O you who made the dwelling desolate since they departed, as once it was cheered
O you who make my home desolate since they left,
by their nearness—may it never lack an abundant downpour!
It was not devoid of a loved one’s cooing.
إنْif غِبْتُمُyou are absent لمnot تَغِيبواyou are absent عنfrom ضمائرناour inmost hearts
إنْ غِبْتُمُ لم تَغِيبوا عن ضمائرنا
وإنْand if حَضَرْتُمyou are present حَمَلْناكمwe carry you علىupon الحدَقthe pupils of the eyes
وإنْ حَضَرْتُم حَمَلْناكم على الحدَق
If you are absent, you are not absent from our inmost hearts;
If you are absent, you are not absent from our conscience,
and if you are present, we bear you upon the pupils of our eyes.
And if you are present, we carry you in our eyelids.
