وَصَهْباءand a tawny wine فاتتeluded أنto تُمَثَّلَbe conceived بالفَهمِby the understanding
أقولُI say وقدwhile already رَقَّتْhas grown subtle عنbeyond اللَّحْظsight والوهمِand fancy
And of a tawny wine beyond the mind's conception,
I say, as it has grown too subtle for sight and fancy:
خُذواtake عَرَضَاًan accident (a non-substantial property) ياO قومpeople قامَsubsists بنفسهby itself
فقدfor indeed خَرَقَhas defied العاداتِthe usual order واسْماًand a name بلاwithout جسمِa body
Take, O people, an accident subsisting by itself
(for it has defied the usual order), and a name without a body.
فقدfor indeed كادnearly يَخْفَىbecomes hidden كَأْسُهاits cup بضيائهاthrough its radiance
كإخفائهاlike its concealing بالجهلthrough folly مَنْقَبةthe virtue الحِلمِforbearance
For its cup nearly disappears in its radiance,
as through folly it conceals the virtue of forbearance.
كأنَّas though الشُّعاعthe radiance الأُرْجُوانيَّpurple فوقَهabove it
سَناglow شَفَقٍtwilight يَنْجَابparts فيin الليلthe night عنaway from نَجْمِa star
As though the purple radiance above it
were twilight's glow, parting at night to reveal a star.
إذاwhen أقبلتْit approaches ولَّىturns away بهاbecause of it الهَمُّcare مُدْبِراًretreating
كماjust as أدبرfled العِفْريتُthe demon منfrom كوكبthe star الرَّجْمpelting

When it approaches, care turns and flees before it,
as the demon fled from the pelting star.
