Why does this Death remain so fearsome,

each day claiming a nobleman from among us?

Enamored of our nobles, it takes

none but the refined, highborn man.

For if Death dealt fairly with us,

taking the noble and the less noble alike,

it would be right for Death to return to us,

and for us not to ask it for delay.

O Death, had you kept away from Sakhr,

you would surely have found him pure and chaste.

He lived fifty years, condemning wrongdoing

among us and freely bestowing kindness.

God's mercy and peace be upon him,

and may spring water his grave in autumn.
