Whoever blames me for loving Kuz and remembering him,
He who blamed me for loving a wine-skin and speaking of it,
May he suffer what I suffered when kinship pressed upon me.
Has met what I met when the saddle-bags were packed.
فياso, ah حَبّذاhow admirable كوزٌKuz إذاwhen الخَيْلُthe horses أدبَرَتْretreated

Ah, how admirable is Kuz when the horses retreat,
So excellent is a wine-skin when the horses have turned back,
And dust rises over the sandy flats and the hillocks.
And dust is stirred up in the hollows and on the hillsides.

كُوَيزُ بنُ صَخرٍ ليلة َ الرّيحِ والظُّلَمْ
What a fine young man—you seek the light of his fire—
The best kind of youth goes forth in the light of its fire,
Kuwayz son of Sakhr, on a night of wind and darkness,
Kawyz son of Sakhara on a night of wind and darkness.

When the mature, high-humped she-camel seeks shelter in her trailing hair,
When the timid wild cows take refuge in its covering,
And seeks refuge with those taking cover among the acacias.
And take refuge in one who is merciful and gentle.
وقدand indeed حالَhas passed خيرٌgoodness منfrom أُناسٍpeople ورِفْدُهُمْand their bounty
وقد حالَ خيرٌ من أُناسٍ ورِفْدُهُمْ
بكفَّيinto the two hands of غلامٍa youth لاnot ضنينٍstingy ولابرمْand not weary of giving
بكفَّي غلامٍ لا ضنينٍ ولابرمْ
The goodness of people and their bounty have passed
And the best part of some people and their bounty was shut off
Into the hands of a youth neither stingy nor weary of giving.
By the palms of a boy who was neither grudging nor mean.
