Put aside misguided talk; we suffice

to lock horns with the ram of battle, today as yesterday.

So Khalid is more entitled to an excuse than you,

the morning he ascended a clear path of truth,

driving against you, by God's leave, with firm resolve,

    right-crossing ones—no stumbling before them—and left-crossing ones.

They announced Malik's death at al-Taj when they descended upon it,

scowling, baring their teeth amid the drifting dust.

So if Salma has already made you weep for Malik,

we left women wailing over him, and a wailing man.
