O sons of Sulaym, if you meet Faq‘as

in a cramped enclosure beside rugged ground,

then confront them with your swords and your spears,

and with a spray by night like rain,

until you scatter their host, and remember

    Sakhr and his unavenged death,

and horsemen of ours who were slaughtered there

in a span of ten in times gone by.

He met Rabi‘ah in battle, and he was struck

by a thrust that pierced deep into his chest,

with a straight spear, supple at the joints, its point

    keen-edged, like a vulture’s leading wing-feather.

And Rabi‘ah escaped that day, hard-pressed,

sparing no effort as he ran at full speed.

Then a lean mare bore him to the slender spear-points,

like an eagle that left its nest in the morning.

And indeed we captured Khalid; then he was given protection

by ‘Awf, who released him on set terms.

And indeed our judgment concerning Khalid was overtaken

by what grieved the horsemen forever after.
