ياO عَينِmy eye جوديpour forth generously بِدَمعٍwith tears غَيرِnot مَنزورِscant
مِثلِlike الجُمانِpearls عَلىupon الخَدَّينِboth cheeks مَحدورِstreaming down
O my eye, pour forth tears without stint,
O eye, shed unrestrained tears
Like pearls streaming down both cheeks.
Like raindrops streaming down my cheeks
وَاِبكيand weep for أَخاًa brother كانَwas مَحموداًpraised شَمائِلُهُhis qualities
مِثلَlike الهِلالِthe crescent moon مُنيراًradiant غَيرَnot مَغمورِobscured
And weep for a brother whose qualities were praised,
And mourn a brother whose character was praiseworthy
Like the crescent moon, radiant and unobscured.
Like the radiant, unobscured crescent moon
وَفارِسَand the rider الخَيلِof the horses وافَتهُovertook him مَنِيَّتُهُhis death
فَفيso in فُؤادِيَmy heart صَدعٌa fracture غَيرُnot مَجبورِmended
And the rider of steeds, whom death overtook;
The horseman was overtaken by his fate
So in my heart lies a fracture, unhealed.
Leaving my heart shattered beyond repair
نِعمَhow fine الفَتىthe youth كُنتَyou were إِذwhen حَنَّتmoaned مُرَفرِفَةًfluttering
هوجُraging الرِياحِthe winds حَنينَthe wailing of الوُلَّهِthe distraught الحورِthose with contrasting white and dark eyes
What a fine youth you were when they moaned, fluttering—
What a noble lad you were when the gusting winds
The raging winds, with the wailing of the distraught, dark-eyed ones.
Moaned like lovesick desert gazelles
وَالخَيلُand the horses تَعثُرُstumble بِالأَبطالِwith the warriors عابِسَةًgrim-faced
مِثلَlike السَراحينَwolves مِنamong كابٍone fallen headlong وَمَعفورِand one dust-covered
And the horses, grim-faced, stumbled with the warriors,
And the horses stumbled over the scowling heroes
Like wolves—some fallen headlong, others dust-covered.
Like frightened ostriches in flight
