ياO عَينِeye جوديpour forth generously بِدَمعٍwith tears مِنكِfrom you تَهمالِflowing copiously
وَعَبرَةٍand a tear بِنَحيبٍwith sobbing بَعدَafter إِعوالِwailing
O eye, pour forth your tears in torrents,
O my eyes, shed tears generously,
and tears with sobbing after wailing.
And sobbing laments after stumbling,
لاdo not تَسأَميgrow weary أَنto تَجوديpour forth generously غَيرَwithout خاذِلَةٍfailing
فَيضاًa flood كَفَيضِlike the overflow of غُروبٍlarge water buckets ذاتِhaving أَوشالِtrickling streams
Do not tire of pouring forth, never failing,
Do not grow weary of shedding freely, unfailing,
a flood like the overflow of great buckets spilling rivulets.
A downpour like the twilight with long shadows.
وَاِبكيand weep لِصَخرٍfor Sakhr طِوالَthroughout الدَهرِall time وَاِنتَحِبيand sob
حَتّىuntil تُحُلّيyou come to rest ضَريحاًa grave بَينَamong أَجبالِmountains
And weep for Sakhr forever, and sob,
And cry for a rock enduring through the ages, wail
until you lie in a grave among the mountains.
Until you adorn a tomb between mountains.
ياO لَهفَanguish نَفسيmy soul عَلىfor صَخرٍSakhr وَقَدand indeed لَهِفَتgrieved
نَفسيmy soul إِذاwhen اِلتَفَّgrappled أَبطالٌchampions بِأَبطالِwith champions
Alas, my soul's anguish for Sakhr! And anguish indeed seized
Oh how my soul yearns for a rock, and yearned
my soul when champions grappled with champions.
My soul when heroes gathered with heroes.
وَاِبكيهِand weep for him لِلطارِقِfor the night visitor المُنتابِwho returns repeatedly نائِلَهُhis bounty
وَفيand in الحَقيقَةِhonor to be defended وَالإِعطاءِand the giving لِلمالِof wealth
And weep for him for the night visitor returning for his bounty,
And cry for him the nightly visitor, achieving
and for his defense of honor and his giving of wealth.
True generosity and giving wealth.
وَاِبكيهِand weep for him لِلخَيلِfor the horses تَحتَbeneath النَقعِthe dust cloud عابِسَةًgrim-faced
كَأَنَّas though أَكتافَهاtheir shoulders عُلَّتwere drenched بِجِريالِwith crimson dye
And weep for him for the horses, grim beneath the dust,
And cry for him, for the horses beneath the saddle blankets morose,
as though their shoulders were drenched in crimson dye.
As if their shoulders were draped with chainmail.
يَذودُهاhe keeps them away عَنfrom حِمامِthe doom of المَوتِdeath ذائِدَةٌa defender
كَاللَيثِlike a lion يَحميguards عَريناًa den دونَin defense of أَشبالِlion cubs
A defender keeps them from the doom of death,
Warding them off from the death struggle, repelling
like a lion guarding a den in defense of its cubs.
Like a lion guarding a den beyond the cubs.
سَقىmay he water الإِلَهُGod ضَريحاًa grave جَنَّenclosed أَعظُمَهُhis bones
وَروحَهُand his soul بِغَزيرِwith abundant rain المُزنِthe rainclouds هَطّالِpouring down
May God water the grave that encloses his bones,
God watered a tomb most glorious,
and his soul, with the rainclouds' abundant downpour.
And its soul with copious destined rains.
