O eye, be lavish with the tears you shed,

When people grow quiet or are about to bow their heads.

Indeed, she reminds me of Sakhr whenever she coos—

Upon the branches, a loud-calling dove with rings about her neck—

And every tearful woman who spends the night awake,

Weeping as one sorrowful at heart and full of longing weeps.

Do not lie, for death cuts down

All creation except the One who endures.

    تُعطي الجَزيلَ بِوَجهٍ مِنكَ مِشراقِ

    You are the noble youth who guards his kin and honor;

You give lavish gifts with your face aglow.

And you give the old male camel and old she-camel together, gathering them together,

And every thoroughbred steed that races ahead to the finish.

Indeed, I shall weep for Abu Hassan, lamenting him,

As long as I live, at every nightfall and sunrise.
