بَكَتwept عَينيmy eye وَحُقَّand was due لَهاto it العَويلُwailing
وَهاضَand broke جَناحِيَmy wing الحَدَثُthe calamity الجَليلُgrave
My eye wept, and wailing was its due.
My eyes wept and rightly so they mourn
And the grave calamity broke my wing.
My wings are clipped, my pillars torn
فَقَدتُmay I lose الدَهرَTime كَيفَhow أَكَلَّweakened رُكنيmy pillar
لِأَقوامٍfor people مَوَدَّتُهُمtheir affection قَليلُscant
May I be rid of Time! How it has weakened my pillar,
Alas time eats what I've forlorn
For people whose affection is scant.
For people whose love for me wasn't borne
عَلىfor نَفَرٍa band of men هُمُthey كانواwere جَناحيmy wing
عَلَيهِمupon them حينَwhen تَلقاهُمyou meet them قَبولُcharm
For a band of men who were my wing,
For a band they were my wings to soar
There is charm about them when you meet them.
In their acceptance I'd fly and soar
فَذَكَّرَنيso he reminded me أَخيmy brother قَوماًpeople تَوَلَّواdeparted
عَلَيَّupon me بِذِكرِهِمwith their remembrance ماas long as قيلَis spoken قيلُspeech
So my brother reminded me of people who had departed.
But their betrayal my brother swore
Let me remember them as long as words are spoken.
At their mention my heart is sore
مُعاوِيَةُMuʿawiyah بنُson of عَمروٍʿAmr كانَwas رُكنيmy pillar
وَصَخراًand Sakhr كانَwas ظِلُّهُمُtheir shade الظَليلُsheltering
Muʿawiyah ibn ʿAmr was my pillar,
Muawiyah ibn Amr my pillar foremost
And Sakhr was their sheltering shade.
Their shade was comfort the most
ذَكَرتُI remembered فَغالَنيthen it overwhelmed me وَنَكاand wounded فُؤاديmy heart
وَأَرَّقَand kept awake قَومِيَmy people الحُزنُgrief الطَويلُlong-lasting
I remembered; then it overwhelmed me and wounded my heart,
Remembering anguish my heart they roast
And long grief kept my people awake.
My people saddened, gloom they host
أُلوpossessors of عِزٍّmight كَأَنَّهُمُas though they were غِضابٌangry
وَمَجدٍand glory مَدَّهُincreased it الحَسَبُancestral honor الطَويلُlong-standing
Men of might, as though they were angry,
Grandeur and glory forever they boast
And of glory, increased by long-standing ancestral honor.
Pride and glory that ever grows
هُمُthey سادواled مَعَدّاًMaʿadd فيin صِباهُمtheir boyhood
وَسادواand they led وَهُمُwhile they were شَبابٌyoung men أَوor كُهولُmiddle-aged men
They led Maʿadd in their boyhood,
They ruled Ma'add in their youth
And led whether they were young or middle-aged.
As elders rule, for glory and truth
فَبَكّيso weep أُمَّmother of عَمروٍʿAmr كُلَّevery يَومٍday
أَخاa brother ثِقَةٍtrustworthiness مُحَيّاهُhis face جَميلُhandsome
So weep, Umm ʿAmr, every day,
Amr's mother weeps for her brother
For a trustworthy brother with a handsome face.
Gentle and kind unlike any other
