Ah, I see no one among people like Muʿāwiya,

when one of the nights comes bearing calamity—

a calamity whose faint sound the dogs strain to hear,

and which emerges openly from the secrecy of private counsel.

Ah, I see no horseman like the lionlike rider,

when boldness and open daring seize him.

And he was war's mainstay when it flared,

    when it bared its shank, blazing fiercely;

and a leader of cavalry against another, as though they were

ghouls and eagles, with fierce guards riding them.

We have worn away, but Tiʿār does not; nor is it seen

despite the ravages of time, except just as it was.

So I swore: my tears and wailing shall never cease

in grief for you, as long as a supplicant calls upon God.
