    وَأَوجَعَني الدَهرُ قَرعاً وَغَمزا

    Time has gnawed me bare, biting and cutting;

And time has hurt me with blows and crushing pressure.

And it destroyed my men, and they perished together,

So my heart was left distraught over them.

As though they had never been a sanctuary held in awe,

When, among men in those days, whoever was mighty plundered.

And they were the chiefs of Banu Malik,

And the tribe's adornment in generosity and might.

And from of old they were healers of the destitute,

And they were a refuge from fear.

And they defended their neighbor, while the women

Felt fear violently jolt their entrails,

On the morning they met them with a massed army,

Massive, leaving a low rumble in the earth,

With white sword-blades and brown spears:

With the white blades they struck, and with the brown spears they thrust,

And with horses surging with armored riders,

And galloping swiftly beneath the dust-cloud.

We sheared the forelocks of its horsemen,

And they had thought those locks would never be shorn.

And whoever, among those who face wars, thinks

That he will go unharmed has thought foolishly.

We practice self-restraint and know the duty of hospitality,

And we take praise as provision and treasure.

And in war we wear a fabric of iron,

And in peace we trail silk-and-wool cloth and silk.
