يُؤَرِّقُنيkeeps me sleepless التَذَكُّرُremembrance حينَwhen أُمسيI enter the evening
فَأُصبِحُso I reach morning قَدalready بُليتُI have been afflicted بِفَرطِby an excess of نُكسِrelapsing grief
Remembrance keeps me sleepless when evening falls,
And morning finds me worn by overwhelming, recurring grief,
عَلىover صَخرٍSakhr وَأَيُّand what فَتىًyoung man كَصَخرٍlike Sakhr
لِيَومِfor a day of كَريهَةٍbattle وَطِعانِand spearplay حِلسِrelentless
For Sakhr—and what young man was like Sakhr
For a day of battle and relentless spearplay,
وَلِلخَصمِand against the adversary الأَلَدُّthe stubborn إِذاwhen تَعَدّىhe transgresses
لِيَأخُذَto recover حَقَّthe right of مَظلومٍa wronged person بِقِنسِby force
And against the stubborn adversary when he overstepped,
To recover a wronged man's due by force?
فَلَمso never أَرَhave I seen مِثلَهُhis like رُزءًa loss لِجِنٍّto jinn
وَلَمand never أَرَhave I seen مِثلَهُhis like رُزءًa loss لِإِنسِto humankind
Never have I seen so great a loss to jinn,
Nor have I seen so great a loss to humankind:
أَشَدَّstronger عَلىagainst صُروفِthe vicissitudes of الدَهرِtime أَيداًin might
وَأَفصَلَand more decisive فيin الخُطوبِgrave affairs بِغَيرِwithout لَبسِconfusion
Stronger in might against the vicissitudes of time,
And more decisive in crises, without confusion.
وَضَيفٍand many a guest طارِقٍarriving by night أَوor مُستَجيرٍone seeking refuge
يُرَوَّعُis terrified قَلبُهُhis heart مِنby كُلِّevery جَرسِsound
And many a guest arriving by night, or a seeker of refuge,
His heart terrified by every sound—
فَأَكرَمَهُso he honored him وَآمَنَهُand gave him safety فَأَمسىso by evening he was
خَلِيّاًfree بالُهُhis mind مِنfrom كُلِّevery بُؤسِmisery
He honored him and gave him safety, so by evening
His mind was free of every misery.
يُذَكِّرُنيreminds me طُلوعُthe rising of الشَمسِthe sun صَخراًSakhr
وَأَذكُرُهُand I remember him لِكُلِّat every غُروبِsetting of شَمسِthe sun
The rising sun reminds me of Sakhr,
And I remember him at every sunset.
وَلَولاand were it not for كَثرَةُthe multitude of الباكينَthose weeping حَوليaround me
عَلىfor إِخوانِهِمtheir brothers لَقَتَلتُI would surely have killed نَفسيmyself
And were it not for the many weeping around me
For their brothers, I would surely have killed myself.
وَلَكِنbut لاnot أَزالُI cease أَرىI see عَجولاًa bereaved mother
وَباكِيَةًand a weeping woman تَنوحُshe wails لِيَومِover a day of نَحسِmisfortune
But I still see a bereaved mother
And a weeping woman lamenting a day of ill fortune.
أَراهاI see her والِهاًdistraught تَبكيshe weeps for أَخاهاher brother
عَشِيَّةَon the evening of رُزئِهِhis loss أَوor غِبَّfollowing أَمسِyesterday
I see her distraught, weeping for her brother,
On the evening of his loss, or the following day.
وَماand not يَبكونَthey weep for مِثلَthe like of أَخيmy brother وَلَكِنbut
أُعَزّيI console النَفسَthe soul عَنهُfor his loss بِالتَأَسّيby taking solace in others' example
And they do not weep for the like of my brother, but
I console myself for his loss through the example of others.
فَلاso no وَاللَهِby God لاnot أَنساكَI forget you حَتّىuntil
أُفارِقَI part with مُهجَتيmy lifeblood وَيُشَقُّand is dug رَمسيmy grave
No, by God, I shall not forget you until
I part with my lifeblood and my grave is dug.
فَقَدfor indeed وَدَّعتُI bade farewell to يَومَon the day of فِراقِparting from صَخرٍSakhr
أَبيAbu (father of) حَسّانَHassan لَذّاتيmy pleasures وَأُنسيand my comfort
For I bade farewell on the day I parted from Sakhr—
Abu Hassan—to my pleasures and my comfort.
فَياso, oh لَهفيmy anguish عَلَيهِfor him وَلَهفَand the anguish of أُمّيmy mother
أَيُصبِحُdoes he pass the morning فيin الضَريحِthe tomb وَفيهِand in it يُمسيhe passes the evening
Oh, my anguish for him, and my mother's anguish!
Does he pass the morning in the tomb, and the evening there?
