أَلاAh ياO صَخرُSakhr إِنif أَبكَيتَyou made weep عَينيmy eye
لَقَدsurely أَضحَكتَنيyou made me laugh دَهراًa time طَويلاlong
Ah, O Sakhr, if you have made my eye weep,
you surely made me laugh for a long time.
بَكَيتُكَI wept for you فيamong نِساءٍwomen مُعوِلاتٍwailing
وَكُنتُand I was أَحَقَّmost entitled مَنthose who أَبدىgave voice to العَويلاlamentation
I wept for you among wailing women,
and of all who raised a lament, I had the greatest right.
دَفَعتُI warded off بِكَthrough you الجَليلَgrave misfortune وَأَنتَwhile you حَيٌّalive
فَمَنso who ذاis it that يَدفَعُwards off الخَطبَcalamity الجَليلاgrave
Through you I warded off grave misfortune while you were alive;
so who is there to ward off grave calamity?
إِذاif قَبُحَis ugly البُكاءُweeping عَلىfor قَتيلٍa slain man
رَأَيتُI find بُكاءَكَweeping for you الحَسَنَfair الجَميلاbeautiful
If weeping for a slain man is ugly,
I find weeping for you fair and beautiful.
