He raced against his father, and the two came forward,

taking turns with the mantle of glory.

Until, when hearts leapt, and already

    bridle pressed against bridle there,

and the people's cries rose: “Which of them?”

the one answering said then: “I do not know.”

His father's face came to the fore,

and he raced on at his headlong pace.

    Almost—almost he equaled him,

save for the dignity of age and seniority.

And the two, as they emerged, were like

two falcons that had alighted on a nest.
