عَلَيكَfor you اِبنَson of عَمروٍAmr مِنfrom سَنيحٍa bird crossing left to right وَبارِحِand one crossing right to left
Birds gave me an omen of a death I feared
A bird flew past me in the dove cot I warned him
for you, son of Amr—from birds crossing rightward and leftward.
Against you, son of Amr, out of enmity and last night
فَلَمyet did not يُنجِsave صَخراًSakhr ماwhat حَذِرتُI feared وَغالَهُand slew him
مَواقِعُblows غادٍa morning visitor لِلمَنونِof death وَرائِحِand an evening visitor
Yet my foreboding did not save Sakhr; he was slain
Yet my warning a rock did not save, and it destroyed him
by the blows of death's morning and evening visitors.
The places of departure for the one bidding farewell and the first to leave

A captive of the grave; they drag their skirts
A hostage of Rams, whose trains may drag
over him—the drifting sands of fierce, effacing winds.
Over it the claws of wild ravens tearing violently

So, O eye, weep for a man whose fame took wing;
So oh eye cry for a man whose fame has flown
let the eyes of galloping steeds, swimming in their stride, weep for him,
For him weep the eye of the swimming seekers

And a neighbor, should he one day cry out in distress,
And the neighbor for a day, if he calls for hospitality
would call on him first, seeking help amid calamities.
He first calls the wild beasts for help

The brother of resoluteness in confusion and determination in
whose impact turns white locks black;
She whose impact turns the white hair of old men black

noble in lineage, discerning, lavish with whatever he gained,
A sufficient mentor, intelligent, who brings people together
laying open to plunder the ancestral wealth of the distrustful, spiteful foe.
Permitting the birth of the dim-sighted evil-intentioned backbiter
